In an effort to give you some guidance on how active each Turismo
Aonikenk program might be, we have prepared a table explaining the
level of each journey. If you have any questions, please feel free to
call us at +56-61-228332.
Level 1 - Easy
None of our level 1 trips are particularly difficult, but travel
itself can be wearing. Trips rated level 1 are possible for everyone
of any age in general good health.
Level 2 - Easy to Moderate
Level 2 programs have a wider range of activities and include more
active travel. This also includes trips with short hikes of two to
four hours or horseback riding. Accommodation is in cozy hosterias as
well as in rustic refugios (mountain huts with dormitories, bunks and
shared bathrooms).
Level 3 - Moderate
Level 3 programs, such as our
"Guanaco Trek", involve hiking
over moderate terrain. It is not necessary to carry your big backpack -
you will only carry your daypack with your lunch, water bottle, camera
and extra clothing instead. Programs rated level 3 are possible for
beginners as long as you are in good health and physical condition.
The refugios we stay in serve us as base camps for day hikes with
walking times varying from six to eight hours and differences in
altitude of 2,500 feet (750m) maximum.
Level 4 - Advanced
Level 4 trips include hiking and trekking trips where you will be
active for between six to eight hours a day over steeper and more
rugged terrain carrying your backpack. There can also be longer days
with eight to ten hours with only a small daypack or mixed days
(parts with backpack, parts without). You need to be in excellent
health and physical condition to enjoy these trips. We set up our
"Valle del Silencio & The Thunder of the
Torres" trek (The "W" & a little more...") that one long
hiking day is followed by a more moderate one. Camping is not
necessary, because we will stay in refugios throughout the trip. We
will hike from one hut to the next one and you will be carrying your
own personal belongings including your sleeping bag. Additional group
equipment is not to be carried. There can be other mandatory
activities involved, such as ice hiking and ice climbing. No special
skill is needed for neither ice hiking nor ice climbing. Differences
in altitude go up to a maximum of 3,350 feet (1,000m).
Level 5 - Demanding, difficult
Our most demanding trips take place in remote areas, such as at
Isla Navarino and around
Cabo Froward. They include
trekking five to eight
hours a day on overland and mountainous terrain. We cross rivers, hike
through swamps and are exposed to rough climate, such as at Isla
Navarino, where snow is possible even in summer. The only option to
discover these virgin regions is that trip members are comfortable
with wilderness camping without any facilities. You must carry your
personal equipment and part of the group's gear several days in a row.
This includes sleeping bag, tent, stove, cooking utensils and food.
You need to be in excellent health and physical condition to enjoy
such a tour. You should have experience in trekking with backpack and
you should come equipped with a spirit of adventure and a willingness
to pitch in and help with camp chores. Differences in altitude can go
up to a maximum of 3,350 feet (1,000m).
